Here's an interesting topic, grabbed from here: http://www.livejournal.com/users/worldserpent/90817.html
Like I said in the comment there, my personal opinion is that emoticons aren't meant to map one-on-one to a certain definition/emotion. Rather, they're like facial expressions which have one main meaning most of the time, but can be interpreted differently depending on the person and situation. Anyways, I'd be interested to hear what you all are trying to express with the emoticons you use. (for most common usage, that is)
Here's my list:
:D == generally happy/big smile. I never use this sarcastically because it just has a kiddish excited smiley feel to it.
:P == pppft. joking-ish, silly, sort of laughing at myself
:P~ == even more silly and all the things above (and yes, that's my spit flying out and hitting you in the face) Oddly enough, I don't use this or consider this to be an offensive emoticon.
:) == small smile
^^ == small smile, but I try not to use it as much as :) because it reeks of fangirlese.
XD == fangirly squeeing, etc.
:D~ == happy drooling. Usually over food or what I'm squeeing over.
;_; == sad, crying face
T_T == sad, crying, and annoyed face
>_< == upset face
:3 == cat smile (used to express my own stupidness sometimes, or when I'm trying to be cute x_X)
D: == big frown, "ARGH!"
:( == small frown, usually used to commiserate with someone.
I use the ones below, all very similarly: they all have a very "Oh. God.. ack." feel to them
x_X == dead (usually from disbelief over something), carries a more irritated feel, which can be directed at self or others
-_- == *sigh*
o_O == confusion, disbelief, but in a less irritated, more surprised kind of way
¬_¬ == this one's pretty snide. akin to rolling the eyes.
9_9 == same as the one above, except less snide (it's because the eyes are bigger or something <== (stupid explanation, I know)
>E and >[ == angry faces
>D == evil in a joking way
Anything with additional ;; marks are sweatmarks... which I don't think I'd do justice explaining. And elongated faces are meant to be stronger. Whoa there are a lot! I may have missed some, but that's it for now. :3
